History of Perth prison

Perth prison was built between 1810 - 1812 for the purpose of keeping French prisoners, caputured during the Napoleonic War.400 prisoners arrived when it opened and at one point the prison held 7000 French prisoners.Conditions were said to be basic but relaxed with the prisoners running a market open to everyone. They were returned to France after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 with an emotioal send-off by locals.Between 1815 - 1839 it was used as a military clothing store before returning to the use of a prison in 1840. It is the oldest prison still in use in Scotland.
